Tier A (1-seeds, total 4); Tier B (2-seeds, total 4); Tier C (3- and 4-seeds, total 8); Tier D (5-, 6-, 7-, 8-seeds, total 16); Tier E (9-, 10-, 11-, 12-, 13-, 14-, 15-, and 16-seeds, total 32)

The numbers before the field show the seeds within a region (prior to the slash) followed by the traditional overall seeded rank at that spot. Leading the name of each school is their seeded position as allocated in the 2009 NCAA Women's basketball tournament bracket.
