Disappointed With the WNBA Western Conference Finals

So…Becky Hammon gets a free ride when it comes to pushing off. I see. For her the rules are different.

I don’t blame Becky or any of the Silver Star players. They are definitely worthy of going to the WNBA finals, and congratulations to them. I’m disappointed that the referees let themselves be cowed by, shall we say, some over-exuberant coaching from Dan Hughes. This is a major reason why I think that if a coach talks to a ref in anything other than reasonable tones at any time other than full time outs, they should be T’d up, every time. A major reason why I’ve watched very little of Detroit’s playoff games is that the display to the refs given by Bill Laimbeer just sickens me and ruins my enjoyment of the game regardless of who wins. You all know how big a fan I am, so that’s saying something.

But back to the game. Truth be told, L.A. did it to themselves when they got Bobbitt. They already had an under-sized point guard in Temeka Johnson, they didn’t need in any way someone even smaller. When you factor in her iffy decisions and total lack of leadership, not just in the playoffs but through the season, I can’t see an upside to having her on the team.

Here’s the deal. Becky Hammon, at 5′6″, is probably the shortest point guard any team should carry…and then only if they are also great shooters. If I’m L.A., I’m already trying to figure out some strategy where I can get a high draft pick so that I might be able to get Kristi Toliver from Maryland in next year’s draft. At 5′7″, she’s pushing the height aspect, but she’s unmistakably a leader and can carry a game with her shot. Or, L.A. could also consider a player like Marissa Coleman, who at 6′1″ can play point forward. Then you split point duties between Parker and Coleman so that neither is sacrificed to the position entirely.

There is little doubt that given the impressiveness of their front court, L.A. has to abandon their tiny guards if they expect to dominate at all…especially once Leslie and Milton-Jones age out of the league.
