Krispy Kreme Klosed? Krazy!

Aug 19th, 2006 | By CJ | Category: Journal

On August 11, Krispy Kremes in Albuquerque (and, as I later found out, Arizona) were closed because the franchise owner filed for bankruptcy protection. Schmuck.

Harsh? Maybe. But what else can you say when the best doggone glazed donuts in the world are snatched from your sugar-coated fingers? Good on yer, mate? I don’t think so. I think what you do is write to KK and respectfully request in civil tones that they find a new franchise owner as soon as they reasonably can. Well, at least you try to do that. Honestly, what with the sugar withdrawal and all, I figure if you manage to take out most of the cuss words, you’ve done well.

Having grown up in the Washington DC area, my love affair with KK is long and profound. I think it reached its pinnacle when our yearbook class sold donuts (Krispy Kreme donuts). Those boxes that couldn’t be delivered were taken home by, you guessed it, us yearbook members. I took home something like six dozen. As you can imagine, or at least those of you who have tasted these more-addicting-than-crack pastries, this bounty only lasted a few days. With me mainlining like that, you can imagine the pain when , after I moved to New Mexico, I discovered that they had no Krispy Kreme. None. Nada.

Several years ago, the closest KK to be had was Las Vegas. My brother would make one or two trips a year for other reasons, but managed enough willpower to return with a couple of dozen cakey delights. Then, huzzah, a KK opened here. And a second. And now they are shuttered.
