Aug 13th, 2008 | By CJ | Category: DiversionsIt blows my mind that one of the biggest headlines coming out of China is that a little girl in the Opening Ceremonies lip-synched a song. Are you kidding me? This is an issue? That a little girl during an entertainment presentation wasn’t the actual singer? Really? This is making headlines and yet there is some age-synching going on in gymnastics. The word is truly mad.
In my previous post (link) I mentioned that the major errors committed by Alicia Sacramone had no real effect on the final result. Conversely, I’m feeling much scorn for Michael Orozco on the U.S. men’s Soccer Team for throwing an elbow in the 3rd minute of the match, earning a red card (i.e. being ejected from the game), and forcing his team to play 10 vs 11 for the remaining 87 minutes of the game. As a result, in a game where the U.S. only needed a draw or better to advance, they lost to Nigeria 2-1, which eliminated the Americans from the competition. This is a case where someone actually did voluntarily commit an action that had a direct effect on the run of the match. This is a case where there is an easy and clear target for finger-pointing. Orozco is the reason why the U.S. never had a chance to advance. It’s on him. Kudos for the rest of the team who played so valiantly to almost advance the next round in spite of this impetuous hot-head.
Other than that…a pretty light day. It was good for channel-surfing, but not fantastic for memorable moments.
