I was working on “Arachne Reborn” in my studio. The door was open. A hummingbird flew in and hovered near my head. It seemed to look at my painting. It then chattered for a bit before flying back outside.
Everyone’s a critic!
Living in New Mexico, one can’t help but be aware of the symbolism attached to certain animals. The hummingbird dropping by is certainly an event that can easily be taken as an omen…and given the attributes usually associated with hummingbirds, a favorable one at that. Hummingbirds search for the sweetness of life, they are agile messengers between worlds, and that, “Hummingbird brings love as no other medicine can.*”
I need to plan to honor the hummingbird in a future piece of art as thanks for stopping by.
A quick follow-up. During last night’s session, a really big spider wandered on by (almost as big as the one in the painting). I didn’t hear any critiques before ey left, but it seemed fitting that one of Arachne’s children would drop by as the painting was nearing completion.
