I’d erred with the eyes and wanted to get that right. So, in the grand tradition of artists doing a piece as many times as necessary to be satisfied, I tried again. This is a fairly standard sketch using woodless pencils as well as leads in lead holders. The vast majority of the blending was done using stumps. I prefer using stumps to my fingers to avoid transfer of oils as well as having a marked reduction in the risk of inadvertent smudging. Work on the piece was very sporadic over the course of three weeks: an hour here, a couple of hours there. The actual image is a bit larger than shown, as this was always intended to be matted. Gift For a Beautiful Woman Size:  n/a Medium:  Digital (originally colored pencil) Support:  Bristol board Notes:  Originally a physical artwork This work started life as colored pencil art on bristol board (heavy lightly-textured paper). Unfortunately, after being scanned, the original was lost—which is mostly why it’s now listed as a digital image. I like to use the edge of images in less than conventional ways when it makes sense to. Here, the woman (based on actor/model Julie McCullough) is contentedly leaning on the edge of the frame, drinking in the sunset-bathed landscape. What doesn’t come across so well in this incarnation is that she’s holding a rather large and thick book. Now, whether the book is the gift, or whether something else is I leave as a creative exercise for the viewer. Oh, btw, Ms McCullough was very nice in the note she wrote about this work.
